    Great Salt Lake Oil Jetty

The Great Salt Lake Oil Jetty is located on the Northwest arm of the Lake, near Rozel Point. The area has been used since the 1920’s through the 1980’s as an oil drilling exploration site. The Great Salt Lake is the remnant of Lake Bonneville; a great ice age lake that rose dramatically from a small saline lake 30,000 years ago. The lake is the largest natural lake west of the Mississippi River. The Great Salt Lake is salty because it does not have an outlet.
